Dedicated to the memory of Maisie Garland

This website is a tribute to Maisie (Mary) Garland, much loved and gratefully remembered. We will appreciate all who contribute memories and tributes and photos of her and her family. In the Galleries section (or just scroll down), you will find a section for "Pictures" (upload your photos) and a section for "Thoughts" (for memories and tributes). And then, also in the Galleries section, under Music, you will find recordings from the Thanksgiving service - including our favourite hymns, also Sid's tribute to his mother and Rev Gareth Burke's address (and you can follow the Order of Service below). We will also appreciate all who wish to contribute "Donations" to a cause that was dear to her heart: Africa Christian Textbooks (ACTS).

Though she will be greatly missed in the family and in the wider family of God, we rejoice that she is “with Christ which is better by far” (Phil 1:23). The family are so thankful to God for such a warm, loving and encouraging mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. At the age of 12, Maisie was convicted of her sin and turned to the Lord Jesus, trusting in his merits alone for her salvation. She never wavered from her commitment to serving God. Many people felt the impact of her life as she served in various ways: as the wife of a pastor, as a mother and grandmother, as a Women’s leader, Sunday School teacher, youth organisation leader (Campaigner “chief”), prayer group leader and mission supporter.

We are so thankful for all God did through her life and for the good health and many years that God granted her so that she was able to stay in her own home until after her 98th birthday! We appreciated the carers who enabled her to keep a measure of independence for so long. With declining mental and physical health from the end of November 2022, we are also very thankful for the good care she received for the remaining months of her life – first in Faith House, Finaghy, and then in Park Manor Oaks Nursing Home.

We are grateful for the many messages of sympathy and prayers that have encouraged us as we adjust to our loss and carry on in the service of the Master she served and now sees face to face!

We are thankful for all who were able to attend the funeral services. We understand that many people were unable to join us either at the graveside or in the church, but we invite all to check out the Order of Service (under the Funeral Notice). We hope you enjoy looking at the more than 60 "pictures" below which in many cases have captions to record more of the story of this life that God blessed and used to bless many others in the family and in the family of God locally and even globally!

Condolence Letter from Rev Luka Vandi & Family on the Loss of Granny (=Kaka) To: Rev Dr Sid Garland Dear Sir, Greetings in Jesus’ Name! It is with all soberness and a heart full of grief and sadness that I write you this message on behalf of my family. Sir, I want to express to you that Kaka’s departure is a painful story that came to us as a family, as we daily put Kaka in our prayers for recovery. Kaka has proven over the years that she can overcome every challenge that came her way. So we were hopeful that she will make it to the coming year with a desire of seeing her again. Unfortunately, Kaka left us; we will miss Kaka for her kindness, love, care and prayers. Every time I send you greetings, it is not usually complete when I don’t hear how Kaka is doing. Kaka has shown me love and care. She took me as her own and questioned why I am taken all around without rest whenever I come for a visit. She accepted my wife and welcomed us warmly. Kaka was a pillar to us, as we lost all our grandparents long ago before meeting Kaka. She was a model to learn from; she sacrificed her joy and privilege to allow you and the family to come to Nigeria. As a result of her sacrifice, many Pastors, Ministries and Church Leaders were trained and subsequently Africa Christian Textbooks emerged. What would Africa have done if not for Kaka’s sacrifice for Africa? Kaka is mourned today across Churches and organizations across Africa. Only God will reward your sacrifice for Africa, Kaka. We pray God will give us more of your type across the world so that God’s work will be extended beyond what your son and his family have done. On behalf of my Family and Church, we say to our father and mother – take heart. Our brother Dr Peter and family, Debbie and her family, Anna and her family, and to all your relations and the Body of Christ over there, take heart. Yours Sincerely, Revd & Mrs Luka Vandi Uti and Family, Managing Director of ACTS Nigeria
